Samuel L. Jackson
Bridge Detroit reports that 72 percent of the donors in the mayoral primary race live outside Detroit, including actor Samuel L. Jackson, who donated $5,000 to City Council President Mary Sheffield.
Of course, that doesn't include dark money that goes to Political Action Committees, which do not have to disclose their donors.
Malachi Barrett of Bridge Detroit reports in a story published days before the Aug. 5 primary:
Sheffield donors can be found in Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Houston, New Orleans, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. Most of Sheffield’s donations came from outside Detroit. She raised $256,698 from donors who claim Detroit addresses and $811,691 from people who live outside the city. The donor list includes business executives and famous actors like Samuel L. Jackson.
The Michigan Chronicle reports other California notables who donated to Sheffield's campaign include:
Actor Erika Alexander from the show Living Single, $250; Earleatha “Cookie” Johnson, wife of Magic Johnson, $8,000, and Greg Mathis and his wife Linda Reese Mathis, a combined $3,100.
Bridge Detroit's Barrett also reports on local notables who gave in the race, but does not specify where they live:
►Detroit Pistons Vice President Arn Tellem; $8,300 for Sheffield and $8,000 to Detroit City Councilman Fred Durhal III. His wife Nancy gave Sheffield $8,300.
►Avinash Rachmale, CEO of Lakeshore Global Corporation: 7,000 to Sheffield, $4,000 to former Detroit City Council President Saunteel Jenkins, and $500 to Durhal.
