A New York man pleaded guilty Monday to threatening Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel on social media. He admitted making the comments because of her religion and sexual orientation.

According to court documents, on Oct. 21, 2023, Nessel posted on X a photograph of herself and a friend who had been murdered that day. Nessel wrote about her friend’s faith, contributions to the community, and expressed grief and shock about the murder.

The following day, the indictment states, Kevin Delgado, 40, of Bayside, N.Y., posted a threatening reply, describing Nessel in highly offensive terms and writing, "watch every step u take... you will be #murdered."

Delgado pleaded guilty to one count of transmitting threats in interstate commerce.

“The federal government is dedicated to protecting all Americans against threats of violence. Every person has equal dignity, and our office will tirelessly work to protect them," said Detroit Interim U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgon Jr. "Threatening public officials is both illegal and unacceptable."

Delgado will be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Nancy G. Edmunds on Sept. 22. He faces a maximum of five years in prison.
