Mayor Mike Duggan Victory Speech November 2nd, 2021 Election
It's been long assumed that Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, who recently announced that he won't run for a fourth term, is interested in becoming governor.
Detroit News Editorial Editor Nolan Finley writes that Duggan, 66, expected to jump into the 2026 Michigan governor’s race any day now, and that announcement may flush out other candidates who can't afford to stay on the sidelines while Duggan is campaigning. Duggan's term as mayor ends next year.
His toughest opponent is expected to be Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Finley writes.
Other Democratic opponents are expected to include Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II, though he's also been mentioned as a candidate for mayor in 2025.
