Ronald Conwell of Clarkston, in northern Oakland County is the 14th winner of Elon Musk's controversial $1 million giveaway during the final stretch of the presidential campaign, NBC News reports.
The giveaway is part of the campaign to support former President Donald Trump, who Musk is backing.
The Donald Trump supporter, who is a teacher, told NBC News by phone that he found out he won when America PAC came to his home Thursday and delivered an oversized check. That happened just as he was getting ready to hand out Halloween candy. American PAC is a political action committee founded by Musk to support former President Donald Trump's 2024 campaign.
NBC News tracked down other winners in other states in a report aired Saturday evening.
To be eligible for the prize, people must sign a petition in support of the First Amendment, which protects freedom of speech, and the Second Amendment, which protects the right to bear arms. The person must be registered in a swing state, but can be registered to any party.
Every day until Election Day, someone who signs will be randomly selected for the $1 million prize and as a spokesperson for America PAC.
CNN reported last week that the Justice Department warned Musk’s America PAC in recent days that his $1 million sweepstakes may violate federal election law.
When NBC told Conwell that no registered Democrats had won the contest, Conwell, responded that it didn't surprise him. He said he believes Democrats are not ideologically predisposed to sign Musk’s petition in support of the First and Second Amendments, NBC reports.
“If you’re following your ideology and you’re an informed voter and you say that you’re a Democrat, you’re most likely not a supporter of the Constitution,” he told the network.
“When it comes to party affiliation, I don’t think there’s a possibility that you can disaggregate American from Republican,” he said. “If you can’t see that the Republican Party is doing all it can to make sure that this country thrives, I just think that you’re uninformed.”
